J57 Featured In "The Produce"

Keep a look out for J57, the kid is super talented producer. Here's mini feature clip on him from a Cluster magazine and 2dopeboyz.

"“I’m lucky to learn from the people I know,” J57 tells me as he cues up a sample and pats his dog, Suri (co-producer). “A true student doesn’t emulate what they hear, they take what they are taught and apply it with their own flair,” J explains as he lists specific tricks he’s learned from masters. He cites Marco Polo as the “illest with bass lines,” an affinity that Marco personally passed down to him. DJ Premier is another mentor. Premier is the king of chopping samples, taking source material and re-deploying it in altered forms to unleash its hidden potential, an expertise J has not taken for granted. But J, too, has a fair share to offer his teachers and peers alike. He recently worked alongside Premier arranging Nas’ new single,“Regeneration,” which he recorded alongside the Berklee Symphony Orchestra. In this network of crews, hip-hop gods, and students, J57 cites the constant exchange between other artists as what keeps him advancing."

New Artist: Vita Chambers

I recently ran into Vita during CMJ. She hails from Barbados and was discovered by the legendary Sturken & Rogers. These guys own the Bajan pipeline to the music talent on that island. So far they're responsible for bringing us Rihanna and Shontelle. Vita and Hal are next on their agenda.

As you can see she's got the look and has an impressive set of pipes. I had the pleasure of booking her 1st national performance on Centric's reboot of the Soul Train Awards back in 2009. She was a ball of nerves but NAILED the performance and choreography. Keep on the look out for her...

My first trip to Toronto was to see them perform. They were signed to our label at the time and there was a big push to get the rest of Universal and radio programmers behind them. They put on a great show, the music isn't necessarily for me but I found myself singing some of the songs later that night. This video gives you a little taste of what I experienced that night...

Kid Rock

I remember when he was assigned to me in the late 90s. My first thought was "What the hell?" His first video, "Welcome 2 The Party" didn't make any sense to me and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what to do with this project. Then a little while later I saw the video for "I Am The Bullgod" and 50,000 light bulbs went off in my head. I got it, strangely but amazingly I realized that this dude was serious. We worked his major label debut, Devil Without A Cause for a while until things caught fire with a string of smashes "Bawitdaba", "Only God Knows Why", and "Cowboy." MTV embraced Rock and the rest was history.

He's one of the sharpest businessmen (and artist) I know. We worked together a lot for almost nine years. Bob partied hard and worked even harder, he delivered what was needed of him every time. That's a lot more than I can say for the majority of artists I've worked with. The dude deserves all the success he's acheived. If you ever get a chance to see him live he's worth the price, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Since I've worked in music my entire life I found this of use and thought you would too. Here are 32 different possible revenue streams for artists, compiled by the Future of Music Coalition (FMC). The group is currently conducting a survey of musicians to figure out which streams work the best:

A. If you are a composer or songwriter, here are possible revenue streams from your musical compositions...

1. Retail sales: Mechanical royalties from physical sales of recordings of your songs at stores, concerts or via mail order.

2. Digital sales: Mechanical royalties from digital sales via online services (CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, Rhapsody, MySpace Music)

3. Sheet music sales.

4. PRO Royalties: Royalties for the public performance of your work (airplay on radio, TV, movies, jukeboxes, live performance and foreign royalties, and home recording and foreign levy payments) as distributed to you by ASCAP/BMI/SESAC.

5. Advances from publishing companies during a publishing deal.

6. Payments from publishers for litigation settlements.

7. Commissions for works.

B. If you are a performer, possible revenue from sound recordings...

Watching Chamillionaire on this year's Techcrunch Disrupt was very inspiring. He is one of the sharpest artists I've had the pleasure of working with. I rank Chamillionaire with Kid Rock and Ryan Leslie as artists who truly understand and have a clear vision of their business.

I love seeing artists and other creative types take an interest in their business. It's one thing to be creative and have people do the marketing, publicity, & production but it's impressive to understand how everything works. Please watch this clip especially if you're an artist. You need to KNOW the business your in and how things can affect you.

Triple D Tour

My friends know I'm a foodie and I watch certain shows religiously. One of my favs is "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." On one recent episode they interviewed a couple who toured the country visiting all the spots this series has showcased. Of course I thought this was genius and I'm on a mission to copy them. Not as extreme as the couple but if I'm in a city that has one of these restaurants bet your ass I'm there. My first stop was in celebration of my birthday, my fiance surprised me and brought me to Brownstone Diner & Pancake Factory. Highly recommend you visit this place if you're ever in Jersey City!

Ryan is a baaaad dude.... One of the most talented, smartest guys I've ever met. I have no clue why this guy isn't a bigger star than he is. Amazing performer, producer, songwriter words I say can't do him justice. All I needed to do on this shoot was coordinate the dates with BET and his camp. He came back with loads of ideas and a full schedule on what he wanted to do for his 'day in the life' shoot. He rehearsed 2-3 days non-stop with his band (which isn't cheap) and delivered a great performance. Check the clips below and judge for yourself:

RISING ICONS: HAL LINTON (Part 2 of 4)

As you’ve probably noticed I had a lot of artists featured on this show **patting myself on the back**. Out of 8 artists featured in the series, I had half of them (Melanie Fiona, Kid Cudi, Ryan Leslie, & Hal).

Hal is the newest of the bunch. No album, no single, no video just pure talent and presence. After watching this episode you can see that this kid’s a star. This was a fun one to work, unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to do one of the shoots with him. I was away on vacation and of all the business trips I would’ve loved was this one. The Tourism Board of Barbados (Hal’s hometown) actually paid for the crew to fly to Barbados to shoot Hal’s ‘day in the life’ segment. DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!! I LOVE Barbados, flying fish sandwiches, Bank’s beer, and the best (& only) barracuda I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating.

Back to Hal, this dude is amazing. He's one of those guys you love hangin with and throwing back a couple beers and shots of dark rum. I really hope his label does him justice and gets the world to notice his talent. I had the pleasure of listening to some early work which I KNOW will blow your socks off. Follow him on twitter.

Mixtape Comedy Show, Sept 19th

Every month I co-produce a comedy show in NYC. It features Anthony Anderson & Royale Watkins as co-hosts. Every show has a great (if I do say so myself) combination of comedians and musicians. We even stream live on Ustream for those who can't attend in person. We feature four comedians, a live music performance, and a platform for aspiring MCs to show off their rhyming skills in our "Freestyle Challenge."

RISING ICONS: MELANIE FIONA

This was a fun and aggravating episode to work on. We moved the shoot dates about 4-5 times. Management, the channel, and I couldn’t agree on what we wanted to shoot. Each artist’s television shoots are broken down in two parts. One day of shooting had to be a ‘day in the life’ type of shooting where people could get a better sense of Melanie’s personality and her busy schedule. The other day of shooting consists of the performance in front of a live audience.

The aggravating part was that we couldn’t all come to an agreement over what the ‘day in the life’ segment was going to be. The channel and I wanted to shoot in her hometown in Toronto but mgmt wanted it either LA or NY. After A LOT of back and forth, we ended up shooting in NY. The two days of shooting turned out to be great and I give kudos to mgmt to sticking their ground.

If you haven’t already heard of Melanie you depriving yourself of experiencing a true rising star. She is one of the best artists I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Incredible personality, presence, voice, looks, the complete package. When she performed the performance portion of the show, I got chills like a proud papa. All that work culminated into a great mini concert & an episode that aired on BET. Enjoy!

Craig David

Recently, I came across a clip of Craig David performing on a UK TV show. I worked with Craig back in early 2000s to bring his music to the US. His debut album was good from beginning to end, I couldn't stop playing the damn thing!

He was one of the most disciplined eaters I've ever come across. All he ate was a plain chicken breast, baked potato, and broccoli FOR EVERY MEAL!!! Besides being disciplined, he was an all around good guy. Definitely enjoyed working with him and his guitarist, Frasier. Here are two of his videos that I had the pleasure of working (I never get sick of these songs), let me know what you think:

Corneille - An artist you should know about

I had the pleasure of working with this guy last year. Even though we didn't do a lot of things together we got a chance to hang out and become friends. He's an extremely talented songwriter/singer of Rwandan descent with an incredibly powerful story. He's extremely popular in the French language countries and we tried to break him in the States. Obviously the record label got a big #FAIL on this project... We recently reconnected via his manager (Hey LF!) and talked about social media and why he needs to be involved. He just signed up to twitter recently and has been starting be active on facebook. Follow him and tell 'em @b1ward sent ya!

Headliner.fm: New music promotion tool

I love how Web 2.0 enables content creators to gain more power over their success. Even though I spent my career at record labels, I find that the bigger they are the tougher it is for young, progressive artistry to get a decent break. Labels only want the easy, obvious hit. They don't have the time and/or luxury to invest in artist development anymore. I've seen it time and again when labels chase the artist with the hottest buzz and throw tons of $$$ to sign a contract. Once they sign they're rushed to capitalize off the buzz the artist already established on their own. The artist loses control and label pushes it's own agenda down their throat. Headliner.fm seems to be a great tool to use if you're an artist. Haven't tried it out yet but plan to real soon. Would love to hear from you if you have.

I got the chance to see her at Madison Square Garden in 2001 and it's a show I'll never forget. Love that she doesn't change her sound and love that she comes out every 8-10 years with a new album. This is one of my favorite award shows to attend/work. The mood isn't as stressed and serious as the others. This year I had Asher Roth and Pac Div on the show as presenters. Kid Cudi was originally scheduled to perform with Passion Pit but there were some issues we couldn't control. After each show they throw a great party with lots of food, drinks, and music. I got a chance to hang out with Ross Martin(Mr. MTV extraordinaire)who has a blog of his own. Always good to get some blog love, check it out here...

It's been way too long since my last post. Everything has been a whirlwind, can't believe it's already Christmas. Now that I have some time during the holidays I'm going to catch you up to speed.

Just recently I put together a licensing deal with a great new artist Reni Lane and VH1. Her album, Ready is scheduled to come out in early 2010. The single that VH1 is licensing is called "Place For Us" to use as a theme song for a new reality show series. The show, looks like it could rate well because it follows in the path of The Real Houswives, The Hills, etc. This one is actually set in a town I never think about until somebody mentions skiiing. I only started reading this book and it's blowing my mind! I've been reading everything to help me reshape everything I've learned in school and business but this one takes the cake. I'm only 70 pages deep into it and I'm incredibly inspired by it. This has actually been one of the few books to do this for me. Highly recommend you buy/borrow it. Jeff Jarvis I'm a fan now...

FRASIER, 11 seasons of high brow humor. Name another spin-off that won 37 Emmy Awards and actually lasted as long as it's predecessor. My DVR is backlogged with all the repeats airing on Lifetime right now. Right now I'm thinking it sounds really fun to call in sick tomorrow and watch all 77 episodes in the queue.
